My philosophy

It's not about a salary
It's all about reality

Blastmaster and BDP are kicking off old school hip hop video Thursday.
Check it.

Cue Vangelis

American Motor Over Smoldered Field

I'm in a flickr mood today.
But just look at this photo.
My lungs are burning just looking at it.
Gorgeous colors.
Pretty carcinogens.

Get it?
Fish have scales, and this is a fish in extreme close up.
So I've messed with it's "scale"...
Okay, the joke sucks but I thought the picture was neat.

Баба-Ружина кућа / Grandma-Rose's house II

Just meditating on these great photos of walls of abandoned houses in Belgrade.
Strangely haunting and peaceful at the same time.

Stevie on the talk box

When I was a kid Stevie Wonder was like a god to me.
His sound was this incredible mixture of soul and electronic wizardry.
Even today, I get chills when I hear a song like "Superstition".
Dig Stevie covering The Carpenters' "Close to You" using a talk box.

I would love to have a whole TV station devoted to nothing but failed pilots.
So much more entertaining than real TV.
I think I've found my true purpose in life.

Rock Block

Sticking with the rock theme...
Dig this amazing post about a battle of the bands in Jakarta.
Rock knows no borders and obeys no international treaties.

what time is it?

Thursday is old school hip hop video day!
Time to kick back and enjoy some vids from the group that brought me back to hip hop.
Thanks guys,
Prof DefBeat

this guy!

Where did I first see this animation?
Sesame Street?
Electric Company?
The Muppets?
Captain Kangaroo?
I'm leaning towards Mr. Hooper's neighborhood.
I would love to find a compilation of the animation shorts that ran on Sesame Street and Electric Company.

Fat Albert remix

Artists do a visual remix on Saturday morning.

Martin Arnold

"The cinema of Hollywood is a cinema of exclusion, reduction and denial, a cinema of repression. There is always something behind that which is being represented, which was not represented. And it is exactly that that is most interesting to consider."

Martin Arnold

A professor turned me on to this artist last semester. We watched "Alone. Life wastes Andy Hardy" and it was mind blowing.
There is a small clip of it on his site.
Just when you think you know how far you can push the envelope, someone walks up to you, snatches the envelope from your hand and folds into a some 4d origami shape that makes your brain hurt. But hurt in a good way.

but is it art?

Spent last week holed up in a Tennessee lakehouse with our friends.
The last goodbye for a while before they fly off to Jakarta.
Annoying them with a million questions about a life they will lead in some mysterious place in some mysterious future.
"What do they eat in Indonesia?"
"How do you say coffee in Indonesian?"
"Where will you live?"
"How will you watch TV?"
"Are you scared?"
"How do you say you are scared in Indonesian?"
This huge psychic freight train bearing down on them and they have the curious kittens asking them a million silly questions.
So my friend Chad and I arrive at this awkward place where I've pretty much exhausted him with goofy questions and we turn to the only thing that can save us... found art.
We dove into our new project with gusto.
Fueled by our desire to escape the great unknown we threw ourselves into this fabrication of a new beast.
A wehrstag began to claw its way from the loamy soil at the edge of Lake Hickory. A white trash manifestation of the old horned god began to take shape, assembled from the detritus of a million endless summers and the good will of the TVA.
Spongy driftwood, soaked in fetid lake water, propellants, and household cleansers, began to magically self assemble between the rotting framework of a childhood nightmare. A crisscrossed web of melted wirework, rusting chains, and spun sugar helped support and restrain the structure. We clawed at our god, scratching and scorching our prayers on its rough hewn surface. We were both creators and servants of this thing that should not be blogged.
In the end, the spirit released us to our individual quests satisfied for now with our rough sacrifices. Under the gaze of the beast, we said our goodbyes and made our separate ways through the early morning mist to slay orcs, ride dragons, and converse with elves.
Rakh Im Gakh my friend.
Rakh Im Gakh.

My book report today is on Indonesia

Indonesia. Land of mystery. The Republic of Indonesia is located in the Malay Archipelago, the world's largest archipelago, between Indochina and Australia, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans...

After this all I have is a bunch of wiki data.
I can point to it on a map.
I can go to the library and check out books.
But that doesn't make it any more real.
I have some great friends heading off to the other side of the world, but they may as well be heading to Barsoom.
Maybe when they are out hunting Soraks with their four armed Green Martian friend, they'll look up at the sky and remember their friends back on earth.

there's this little thing called the right mouse button...

That problem with flickr... not their fault.
Firefox>right click>block images from
I won't touch the mouse again tonight.

grumble growl

I've noticed some of my pics are down.
I'm using flickr for some of my hosting and they seem to be having technical difficulties.
Stay tuned for further developments.
This concludes this test of the emergency broadcast system.

Yeah, the world can be a bummer sometimes. But look at this guy. Is he letting evil politicians, religious fanatics, and global warming bring him down? Hell no! He's covering himself with silver paint and glitter, putting a kazoo in his mouth and rocking it old school. Staking out his own little patch of weirdness and reminding us of the true meaning of xmas.
